"There has always been those who oppose hunting - who do not believe that humans should pursue and consume wildlife. Some prefer the idea that wild others should live out their lives in nature, while we rely on agricultural processes. Many people believe that hunting damages populations of wild animals. In reality, hunting harvest models are founded on the principle that we will impact populations minimally if we hunt the biological surplus and leave remaining animals to breed. Further, seldom acknowledged is that regulated, science-based hunting harvests can not only be sustainable but preferable in terms of environmental impacts. Regulated harvests can actually add stability to populations that otherwise fluctuate dangerously."

Scotch Whiskey as a £600k Tonic for Black grouse
In 1909, Mathew Gloag, the creator of The Famous Grouse scotch whisky said “Profit there must be, but the interests of the customer and not profits are the first consideration”. 99 years later, and the Famous Grouse Distillery went even further, and extended that sentiment to embrace a bird that is of conservation concern, and whose population has been declining throughout virtually all their European range over the last century. We are talking of the Black grouse tetrao tetria.
In Britain, Black grouse were once widespread, but due to the loss, degradation and fragmentation of habitat, there has been a severe decline in numbers, with the species now confined to upland fringe areas in Scotland, North East England, and North Wales.
In 2008, the Famous Grouse Distillery decided to team up with The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to try and help the species, the partnership coinciding with the launch of its new blended whisky, The Black Grouse. The Distillery agreed to donate £0,50 from every bottle it sold in the UK to the Charity, in order to help fund the conservation of the new whisky’s namesake across what was initially four of its reserves - two in Scotland, one in England, and one in Wales; but which over time was extended to include two further Scottish RSPB reserves.
Just nine years later, in January 2017, the Distillery had raised more than £600,000 to help conserve the black grouse, and during that period there has been an upward trend in its population across RSPB reserves in northern Scotland. The Charity’s focus is now on improving its prospects in southern Scotland, where numbers remain in sharp decline.
In the North of England, 96% of the surviving 800 or so breeding black grouse males occur adjacent to moorland that is actively managed for red grouse, a game bird that is unique to the United Kingdom. That is thanks to grouse moors owners who have planted over 1.1 million native trees in the ghylls of moorland fringes both as a food source, and to help protect black grouse from birds of prey. However, habitat improvements alone are insufficient to help black grouse, and therefore the areas over which the legal control of predators such as foxes, stoats and weasels is undertaken have also been extended, which benefits the many other species of ground nesting birds that share this habitat to breed.
Moorland management is like a three legged stool which, to be successful, requires habitat management, the control of predators, and food. If one leg is missing, then the stool will fall! It is thanks to this management that more than 70% of England’s upland Sites of Special Scientific Interest are managed grouse moors, and over 40% are also designated Special Protection Areas for rare birds, and Special Areas of Conservation for rare vegetation under European wildlife directives – the highest possible protection.
