The Ripley Castle Shoot, near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, is a traditional driven game shoot and grouse moors where true sporting values still exist.
Ripley Castle Shoot days are organised on a “no rush” basis ensuring you have the maximum enjoyment possible. We shoot over 7,000 acres of lowland near Ripley Castle and 4,000 acres of moorland and 3,000 acres of farmland and moorland edge at Eagle Hall & Ashfold Side near Pateley Bridge in Nidderdale.
Ripley Castle Shoot is principally a Members Shoot with Members Days making up over 80% of the days fielded. These days are sold by the gun per day to individual guns or small parties. In order to avoid the day being dominated by one team, small parties are limited to five guns joining the day. If more guns are required the day becomes an Exclusive Day providing days are available.
Members are most welcome to bring guests on Members Days, well behaved non shooting guests and dogs are also most welcome just to enjoy the day.
Our “McRipley” days offer the combined experience of the best of Ripley Castle and Eagle Hall & Ashfold Side. We principally cater for single guns and small parties, with a few exclusive days for full teams, ideal for a roving syndicate or to entertain business clients.
Our days are sold by the gun per day with no overage charged and normally we exceed the bag. We offer a large variety of days from 200 to 450 birds. At Ripley Castle we have over 40 main drives and our emphasis is on presenting good quality birds many of which are extremely testing. The very finest hospitality throughout the day with no overages charged.
A day with The Ripley Castle Shoot is “just like a proper shoot day should be".
Frank Boddy, Shoot Captain:
A day with the Ripley Castle Shoot is “Just how a Proper Driven Shoot Day should be” or should I say, this is what we always try to achieve!
I am often asked what do I enjoy about running a shoot. It certainly does have its challenges but these are soon forgotten once in the company of like-minded people from all walks of life and the real characters driven game shooting seems to attract!
So what is different about our Shoot. Although we welcome full teams, we particularly cater for single guns and small parties. I encourage novice guns to join us providing they have had some clay shooting experience and have an experienced shot or one of our loader/instructors standing with them. I would be disappointed if an individual gun joining us for the first time did not feel at home within a few minutes of arrival.
Planning the days is a challenge in itself as everyone seems to have quite different priorities. I plan each shoot day just how I would expect it to be if I were in the line of guns.
The shoot day starts, with breakfast in the Dining Room at Ripley Castle at 8.30 a.m. At 8.45 a.m. the draw and brief for the day takes place, with a view to leaving for the first drive by approximately 9.15 a.m.
The day normally starts with two drives followed by a mid morning drinks break with delicious pork pies freshly baked by Voakes Pies together with my own ‘brew’ of bullshot once the weather turns cold, then followed by one or two further drives before lunch. We provide, an “Al fresco” barbeque lunch taken in the Shoot Cabin or on the Veranda overlooking Newton brow, á la Spanish partridge shooting for those of you who have been lucky enough to experience this.
Lunch is followed by two drives in the afternoon, giving a total of five or six drives on the day. We finish the day with afternoon tea in the Shoot Cabin.
At the end of the day each gun receives a brace of dressed and chilled oven ready game of their choice and our staff provide a gun cleaning service if required. Any number of additional birds in feather may be purchased at the end of any shoot day.

The Yorkshire Dales has many moods; it can be wild and windswept or quietly tranquil.
It includes some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK, from crags and pavements to an underground labyrinth of caves. Each valley or 'dale' has its own distinct character, set against expansive heather moorland tops.
Spectacular waterfalls and ancient broadleaved woodland contrast with the scattered remains of former mine workings and other rural industries which remind us of the area's rich industrial heritage.
The northern Dales have a wilder, more remote feel to them than the rest of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The hill tops are dominated by heather moorlands that light up purple at the end of the summer. The valleys have intricate patterns of dry stone walls surrounding traditional hay meadows dotted with stone field barns.
