The owner says

Comprising six exceptional West Country shoots, Loyton Sporting prides itself on fantastic sport and unparalleled hospitality.

Established in 2003, Loyton Sporting manages six of the finest and most prestigious driven shoots in Exmoor and the United Kingdom. Each shoot has a distinctive, individual character, yet all share a personal philosophy which is to maintain highest standards with emphasis on the enjoyment of the days, the presentation of the birds and fabulous hospitality. We pride ourselves in great attention to detail in all elements from husbandry of the birds through to the shoot day experience.

On any of our days you will experience shooting in a variety of stunning Exmoor country where you can expect a steady stream of high and testing birds, from varied topography. As well as pheasants and partridge, you may occasionally see wild duck on drives too, which is testament to the craft of our keepers, who constantly strive for both variety and a challenging shooting experience. All of our shoots have a genuine buzz and it is proof to see plenty of family and youngsters on the beating teams in the holidays and at weekends.

We have a team of exceptional chefs supporting us at Loyton. Each has distinct and innovate style and embraces the concept of cooking in the field, pushing the traditional boundaries of shooting lunches. Menus are seasonal, varied and use local suppliers and the game shot throughout the season, teamed with excellent wine pairings and great camaraderie. Our elevenses are renowned and served from our converted Landrover bars, offering any number of inventive game snacks and more.

We offer a variety of bag sizes and while most of are days are catered for whole teams, we also offer roving dates for individual guns. No matter the day or bag size, the atmosphere will always be the same, professional, friendly and great fun. We do present some of the most challenging birds in the country we are open to all levels of experience and take huge pleasure in welcoming young guns and beginners and can happily arrange instruction.

Challacombe Shoot:

Challacombe presents some of the most challenging partridge in the country surrounded by some of the most beautiful shooting scenery one can find. In 2015 additional land complimenting the existing grounds meant new drives and the exciting option of pheasant added to the mix. It also enabled us to offer smaller, mixed days, through the latter months of the season. Set in pure Exmoor landscape, the heart of the shoot is a reservoir surrounded by moorland. Through this, the birds are driven over the guns to astounding effect, offering dogs a real retrieving challenge. A wonderful spectacle for guns, dog handlers and onlookers alike.

Combe Sydenham:

Once home to Sir Francis Drake, Combe Sydenham centres around a series of leats and ponds which are testament to his skill as a water engineer. Drives provide consistent, technically difficult pheasants from testing terrain with every drive subtly different. The combination of scenery standing gun lines in both open game crop and complimenting woodland adds to it’s beauty. Expect a steady stream of high pheasants but you may too see some partridge or wild duck.

Edgcott Shoot: One of the top 20 shoots

Established 25 years ago Edgcott has been managed by Loyton since 2007 establishing the driven partridge for which it’s now renowned. In the heart of Exmoor countryside, it offers a good mix of testing drives where coveys of partridge and pheasant are flushed out to spectacular effect. The views, whether shooting from a moorland edge, wooded valley or open fields are impressive for even the seasoned shooter. Family origins have set an enduring precedent at Edgcott and there is a very special atmosphere on this impressive, friendly shoot. Although a sizeable operation Edgcott has a comparatively reduced programme to other Exmoor shoots allowing us to offer days of a conservative size through the whole season and the opportunity to shoot in earlier months to a wider audience.

Haddeo Shoot:

Haddeo has been long sited as an epitome of Exe Valley shooting and its proximity to Loyton, the Barnes family’s low key shoot set up in the 1960s, made them perfect partners to be managed together. A combined 6000 acres offers an outstanding spectrum of high bird drives situated around the magnificent Exe Valley. Covering truly beautiful terrain, many drives run along the Haddeo river and the exe with a ford crossing, a spectacular and daunting setting! Famous drives such as St Pauls present a leisurely flow of incredibly high birds seen over the tree tops. Unforgettable for sportsman and spectators alike.

Stuckeridge Shoot:

In exceptionally pretty Devonshire setting, the Stuckeridge shoot offers plentiful, dynamic variety of high quality pheasant. Steep woods of oak and Douglas fir line the Mill stream, that joins the nearby Exe river, over which soar great sweeps of birds that truly define Exmoor shooting. On other drives, guns line the bottom of a cleave while pheasants glide high over the Devon horizon above. The Stuckeridge shoot offers an unostentatious atmosphere enhanced by a team of old friends making up the loading, picking up and beating teams. This enthusiasm makes for a fantastic all-round day appealing to guns and guests alike.

Molland Shoot:

New to Loyton for 2018, Molland is located on the southern edge of Exmoor covering circa 6000 acres and has been in the Throckmorton family for over 800 years. This incredibly pretty estate rolling off the edge of the moor offers wonderful drives of challenging pheasant and partridge, with fantastic Exmoor views. No main roads or even a white line interrupts this beautiful landscape and the valleys it displays. Historic and well-known drives include; West Molland Wood, Pullery, Gourte and Kingswood. Whilst old favourites are difficult to improve upon and we are intent on maintaining Molland’s reputation, we do have a few plans of our own which we are excited about sharing in the forthcoming seasons. Loyton’s new shooting lodge Molland House is located in the village the heart of the shoot and the total renovation promises to be make it the ultimate house for your shooting party.

Location: Loyton is set in a tranquil valley on the eastern fringe of Exmoor it is a great place to unwind after an exhilarating day at the high pheasants.

About your host at Loyton Estate: Angus Barnes and Family, Owners. Loyton is a family enterprise based in rural Devon.  Like the good things we believe in, Loyton has grown organically over the years from dairy farm to thriving diversified business.  Rooted in country life and influenced by our natural surroundings, the venture takes two parts - on one side a well-respected portfolio of some of the finest game shoots in the West Country; on the other, Loyton Lodge, a house for parties, superb food, fine wine and a blissful nights sleep. The Barnes family have been entertaining on this 300-acre Devonshire farm and top quality shoot for over 50 years and in 2018 we are celebrating 15 years of the business as it stands today. We hope that Loyton offers you the best of country living from every aspect.

Game shooting experience at Loyton Estate: Driven shooting is offered from 1st September at Challacombe, Edgcott and Molland, then Combe Sydenham, Haddeo and Stuckeridge from October through to the 1st February.  There are a variety of bag sizes and while we cater in the main for whole teams, we also offer some ‘roving’ days for individual members. Whether a 100 or 500 bird day, the atmosphere will always be with the same – professional, friendly and great fun.The early season bags tend to be larger, but we sell a number of smaller days towards the back end of the season. This allows us to offer some days for the smaller budget and is an ideal opportunity to introduce children. While we present some of the most challenging birds in the country, we are open to all levels of ability and we take great pleasure in welcoming young guns and beginners into the field and can happily arrange instruction.  Activities for non-shooting partners staying can also be arranged, as can afternoons on clays for those feeling a little rusty or new to the sport.
