About

Your host at John and Fran Latham: John and Fran Latham, owners and hosts. John and Fran Latham operates and owns a family business for over 40 years. Yakutat is a wonderful place to visit with a wide variety of opportunities that will fit any traveler. In addition to our world class hunting and fishing, here is a sample of what our Southeast Alaskan rainforest has to offer. We offer local accommodations here to ensure you have a great trip! Fran Latham is your hostess at the Blue Inn.

Fly-fishing experience at John and Fran Latham: The rivers in the Yakutat area support some of the best runs of wild salmon in southeast Alaska.  Area waters support Dolly Varden char and resident rainbow trout year-round while hosting king, sockeye, pink, and silver salmon, and both fall and spring runs of wild steelhead trout. Fly fishing is our preferred method to fish these salmon and trout, though some are more comfortable using level-wind and spinning gear.  We can provide rods, reels, and appropriate flies. Situk River spring run steelhead arrive in early March, reach their peak migration during early May, and generally exit the river system by the end of June. We practice a catch and release ethic due to the relative scarcity of wild stocks, though you may keep one trophy fish (over 36”) for mounting.  As steelhead move out of the river in early June, sockeye and king salmon move in.  Pink and silver salmon finish the season, with silver fishing continuing through the month of October. All of our trips are fully guided.  The techniques for catching and landing these fish are carefully explained, demonstrated, and taught by knowledgeable river guides who have fished these waters for years.  We welcome inexperienced fly-fishermen/women. A comfort away from home .The owners have a beautiful spot on the edge of the water with endless hours of entertainment watching Blue Herons and Bald Eagles. The are generous and kind with their time and make you feel as if their home is your own.
