Walked up, Stalking, Bowhunting, Hunting from a Blind
Popularly coined the “mouse deer” or “pig deer” or any other mix-and match, cross combination of a variety of small, hoofed, spotted, toothy animals, this small forest creature is a fun game to add to your deep forest hunt.
French for “little goat”, chevrotain are native to southeast Asia, central and west Africa.
Instead of looking for antlers, check out their huge canine teeth.
A good guide can spot them, but they are so low to the ground through their thick forest habitat, feeding on nutritious fruits, seeds and plants, they provide a good challenge to any hunter.
Sharp eyes and a fast, confident shot will add the chevrotain to your daily bag for example when out hunting for larger African game such as for duiker.
Through the damp forest wetlands, chevrotain can be taken down many different ways. A driving hunt with a large hunting party is one method highly popular among the local populations.
But because of their small stature, chevrotain are a pleasure for crossbow and bow shooters, as well as pistol, shotgun and rifle hunters that seems like a mix of rat, mouse, deer, hog hunting and target practice have been mixed together.
