The owner says

Coverhead Estate - a shooting and conservation paradise. Coverhead Estate is located at the top of Coverdale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We offer a range of bespoke sporting opportunities and related activity packages: Driven and Walked Up Grouse, Driven and Walked Up Wild Game, Coverhead Introduction to Driven Grouse Courses, Simulated Grouse Practise and various Long Range Rifle Experiences.

Coverhead Estate has been in the same family ownership since 1983. The primary management focus has been to develop a first class sporting estate which delivers a major environmental benefit. All rights are held in hand including grazing, freehold and sporting rights which gives the owners freedom to operate and achieve results.

The owners are passionate about their shooting and have a strong interest in wild game. Grouse are the main sporting output but there is also a good stock in the ‘inby’ ground of wild pheasant, duck, snipe and woodcock.  Two full time keepers are employed and are tasked with looking after the grouse and’ lowland’ wild quarry in equal measure. The Estate offers let days on the main moor for Driven Grouse as well as semi driven days for Grouse on our 'edge' ground.

We pride ourselves on introducing many new guns to the love of Grouse Shooting.  A popular choice is to enjoy an afternoon of extremely realistic Simulated Grouse (three butts in a line) in our purpose built Grouse practice range, followed by the real thing the next day. We use multiple state of the art ProMatic Remote Clay Traps and short horizons  to really get the blood flowing!

In and out of season we offer an Introduction to Grouse Shooting Course which includes expert tuition on the grouse practice range and a lecture on the Red Grouse. This course is designed to get you on target, instill an appreciation for the quarry,  and provide a thorough understanding of the inherent safety aspects of Grouse shooting. Finally we cover off the accepted do's and don’ts on the day itself to give you a sound footing to enjoy your first day of Driven Grouse safe in the knowledge that you are prepared as you can be!
Our Grouse range is open to experienced and novice shots alike with or without instruction.

We strive to make your day as enjoyable as possible. A common comment from our guests is that they feel their experience has been like a family shoot day and this is what we aim to achieve. When you shoot at Coverhead your day will usually be hosted by one of the owning family. Dogs are welcome as we encourage a ‘muck in’ can do attitude from all involved.

A typical driven grouse day at Coverhead Estate
Meet at the onsite lodge for breakfast at 08:00. Briefing at 08:45 and move out in 4x4s at 09:00. Usually we do two drives in the morning followed by a sit down lunch back at the lodge and two drives in the afternoon. We shoot with a 9 or ten gun line, moving up 2 or 3 respectively and always numbering from down slope up. This avoids narrowing the sport on return drives and helps spread out the luck as far as possible. We usually aim to finish by 16:30 with a good high tea or a more substantial meal depending on the teams preference served in the lodge at the end of the day. We know we have done a good job when the guns stay and chat into the evening hours!
