About Ugbrooke Park

From price per person per day

Ugbrooke is set in a serene Devon valley, within sweeping Capability Brown parkland and its characteristic chain of lakes and ponds. These water features, together with the woodland, copses and undulating hills, provide pheasant and duck shooting of the most testing standard.

About the Host

The gamekeeper for 50 years, Alan Easterbrook really is the essence of the Ugbrooke shoot. Alan has been a finalist in the Farmers Weekly Gamekeeper of the Year twice and in 2014 received a two long service awards at the CLA Game Fair. Gamekeeping is in Alan’s blood; his father was underkeeper at Luscombe for the Hoare family. Alexander is the third generation of Clifford’s that Alan has worked with. He was first employed by Alexander’s Grandfather when they would only shoot 25 birds in a day so it is a testament to his spirit and energy that Ugbrooke can now offer the bags that we do. He takes enormous pride in presenting the birds over the guns and meticulously plans bird rearing and cover crops over the estate. Although unusual to offer duck on the same drive as pheasant, Alan has developed a system to provide high, sporting duck. The ducks are fed at the top ponds and game crops, then on a shoot day they come off the high ponds and head back home to the lakes or ponds on the other side of the valley.

Typical day at Ugbrooke Park

For a House Party guest, the shoot day begins with a full English breakfast taken in the dining room. Day shoots don’t miss out however – you’ll be welcomed into the house with steaming hot coffee and toasted bacon butties, all to set you up for the thrilling hours ahead.

Experienced gentlemen loaders, many of whom have shot and loaded at Ugbrooke for over thirty years, are laid on at no extra cost. Whether you have been shooting for years, or this is your first time, their role is to look after you, providing an extra pair of hands, reassurance, expertise and guidance during your day. Elevenses are taken in the field after the second drive – hot soup, sausage rolls, cherry brandy and sloe gin – enough to sustain you through the rest of the morning. A further two drives and back to the house for an unrivalled shoot lunch where the port decanter has been known to take many a lap – just don’t get caught sitting on it!
