With a range of plus/minus 180 meters of water depth, kingfish, or king mackerel are a challenge for even the most seasoned anglers to find.
As a predatory fish, kingfish cruise, feeding on crab, squid, crustaceans, and small baitfish as they travel from reef or structure to structure. As a talented predator, they have sharp, razor-like teeth, so a wire leader or heavy monofilament line is always a must when targeting kingfish.
Grab a bird, a lure that looks like a flying fish and troll for kingfish that are looking up for a speedy bite. The surface noise and commotion will draw the fish up if not bedded too low in the water column.
Deep trolling and dead drifting is also successful, with many different strategies on how to approach the favoured gamefish of the west side of the Atlantic Ocean. Medium bait casting rods, saltwater spinning or fly fishing gear is great for kingfish.
Spearfishing for kingfish is also a common addiction among the saltwater fishing community. Try it out for yourself!
