Fresh Water Fly Fishing for Wild Trout and Indigenous Yellowfish – Rhodes and Lesotho, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Linecasters has for the past two decades successfully guided and tutored fly fishermen on the rivers around Southern Africa. We are passionate about fly fishing and this is our full time occupation. Linecasters guide Fred Steynberg (R.E.F.F.I.S / THETA approved National and International guides), offers unparalleled fresh water guiding on both streams and still waters. Our clients not only experience the thrill of catching wild and indigenous species in these magnificent environs, but also receive professional on-stream tutoring, adding immeasurable value to their fly fishing knowledge and experience. Linecasters is based in Rhodes with the surrounding Rhodes/Lesotho area offering literally hundreds of miles of river frontage to be rediscovered on more than 13 different river systems, with species such as Rainbow trout, Brown trout and Smallmouth Yellowfish. The fish in these rivers are wild; they are not stocked or fed. Using a qualified guide is a wise choice, not only to familiarize oneself with the local conditions but also to walk away having enriched your knowledge of the sport.

About

Location: Linecasters is based in the village of Rhodes, in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa.

About your host at Linecasters: Fred Steynberg, Fly-Fishing Guide. FRED STEYNBERG has been a professional fly fishing guide for more than 20 years and is considered one of the most experienced guides in South Africa. Most of his time has been spent on the clear mountain rivers of Rhodes which boasts over 300 km’s of Africa’s most pristine wild trout waters. The popular smallmouth yellowfish share these untainted waters with the trout. Specializing in river fly fishing, Fred has developed an astounding knowledge of the trout and yellowfish and their habitat in this area. Fred also has trout fishing experience in Sweden, Argentina, Patagonia and New Zealand where he has spent many months stalking large brown trout.

Fishing experience at Linecasters: Rhodes is situated in the remote part of the Southern Drakensberg, South Africa, and is considered to be the principal wild trout destination of the country. The Rhodes area has more than 9 different, pristine streams and rivers to fish and explore with access possible to more than 200km of river frontage. The area also boasts a number of still waters that are either stocked or have wild, breeding trout. Some of these still waters are situated above 2400m above sea level and can produce trophy fish of 6 – 12lbs. Clients can be professionally guided or attempt to go it alone on some of the finest small streams that the country has to offer. The fishing in Rhodes is fly fishing only. Wild trout, mostly rainbows and indigenous smallmouth bass and yellowfish can be caught on dry flies and nymphs. The best season for trout in the rivers is from September to May but contingent on river conditions. The best season for the migrating yellowfish is from October to March. We also provide guided saltwater fishing trips. Click here for quick link country guide.
