About Chrome Chasers

From price per person per day

Your host at Chrome Chasers: Rick Matney, Guide. Rick grew up fly fishing in Northeastern Washington with his Dad and Grandfather. In 2000, he moved to Bozeman Montana for college where he earned a degree in Cell Biology. Working his way through school as a trout guide, he has now turned his passion into a career. Chrome Chasers is an equal opportunity provider and is a permit holder of the Tongass National Forest. All activities take place on the Tongass National Forest. Rick Guides for Montana Troutfitters in Bozeman and is on pro-staff with Echo Fly Rods, Airflo Fly Lines, and Hatch Reels. When trout season winds down in Montana, Rick turns his attention towards steelhead in the fall through spring months. Rick is a strong advocate for the conservation of wild steelhead and brings a unique energy to everything he does. Along with his expert knowledge of steelhead, Rick also doubles as gourmet chef. Rick is a licensed Coast Guard Captain and Guide.

Typical day at Chrome Chasers

There are 2 flights a day into Wrangell. We suggest arriving on the Sunday morning flight and departing on either of the Saturday flights. We pick you up at the airport and take you to get your Alaska fishing licenses, then to our lodge in Wrangell to get settled in, unpacked, and geared up. The first evening, you have the choice to either fish one of the local streams near town, set crab and shrimp pots, or relax at the lodge. We always finish the day with a gourmet dinner and a good night’s sleep. The next 5 days will be spent fishing as many as 9 different streams or rivers. We fish a different river or stream each day to maximize your experience and minimize our impact on these unique fisheries. From the 33 foot Chrome Chaser, we launch smaller landing crafts to access the creek mouths by zodiac or small jet sled. Once we land, the fun really begins. We take a last glimpse back at the Chrome Chaser before heading up stream in search of the prize – a bright, wild steelhead. These are rugged and beautiful streams that require plenty of hiking, bushwhacking and wading to access. This is all part of the adventure, and we think you will agree that the extra sweat and effort are more than worth it. Breakfast and lunch are provided each day. Following the days fishing, on the boat ride back to port, we will stop to pull shrimp and crab pots in preparation for what may be the freshest seafood dinner you’ve ever eaten.
