Officially opened in 1993, Backdoor Outfitters was the dream of the Cook family. With little more than that dream, and an idea of what they wanted to provide( a location where people could come, be treated like family, and explore all the things God provided to this wonderful country we call Montana… at a price that was affordable, yet still provided all the amenities anyone might wish!’) the Cook family headed out to look for property that would provide the base they needed.
Flyfishing. Just mention the word and, as if by magic, all sorts of images appear. Beautiful loops of colored line passing above pristine green waters; anglers hip deep in a mountain stream while clouds of caddis flutter in the foliage of adjoining bushes; or a thick shouldered rainbow held half out of the water while a smiling fisherman reaches down to unpin a stimulator from its lower jaw. These are just a few of the things that come to mind when I hear that word. Of course, it’s more than that, and rightfully so.
Location: Backdoor Outfitters is based in Stevensville, Montana offering numerous fishing opportunities in Montana rivers.
About your host at Backdoor Outfitters: Andrew Hattick, Fly Fishing Guide. At 28, Andrew is the youngest guide at Backdoor Outfitters, but don’t let his age fool you. With a passion or outdoor sports that began as a child growing up in the Bitterroot Valley, he is an accomplished outdoorsman. Andrew became especially passionate about the art of fly fishing while attending Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana where he obtained his bachelor’s degree as well as a guides license. Of the two, Andrew admits the second holds more meaning for him than the first, as it allows him to share his passion with others on the many streams and rivers of Montana.
Fishing experience at Backdoor Outfitters: Let Backdoor Outfitters take you on the float of your dreams. Kick back and relax as you let the currents, and your guide, take you down the river of your choice. Let your guide explain the history, geology and ecosystems you’re traveling upon. Enjoy the abundant wildlife that seeks out our river systems and calls them home, while you imagine the difference between the way things are now, and the way they were one hundred, or two hundred, years ago. Perhaps, even pretend you are a member of the Lewis and Clark campaign… as you will be floating the very waters they ventured upon so many years ago.
Then, somewhere around the half way point, sit back and relax as your guide prepares a shore lunch specially prepared for your enjoyment. Perhaps a slice of barbecued salmon, along with a tossed salad, and cherry cheesecake… with a bottle of your favorite Chardonnay. Or, maybe, a steak, salad and strawberry shortcake… and of course your favorite wine. Finally, when you resume your float, with any luck, you will enjoy one of Montana’s greatest treasures; a sunset rich with the colors and sounds associated with that period of time when daytime creatures return to their dens, while those that prefer the darkness begin to emerge from their slumbers.
Just remember that the purpose of this float is two fold; first to relax and enjoy the sense of peace associated with floating a river, and second to learn as much as possible about the intricacies of our natural environment. Let Backdoor Outfitters, with more than twenty years of experience in the field of floating our waterways and study of these intricacies, fulfill both these requirements in a manner that is both professional, as well as personal and fun.
